Domain Registration
General

Can I reserve my .com.au or .net.au domain name while I am waiting for my business name to be registered?

Unfortunately, no. A domain name application will only go through if a relevant business number is provided. This can be an ACN, ABN or State Registered Business Number.

Does the domain name I am applying for have to be the same as my business name?

With .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, and .uk you can apply for any name that is available.

With the new .au registry policy, the domain name should be derived from the business name that is attached to the business number being provided. You can also register a .au domain name that is a product or service that you provide under that business name.

What are the rules relating to ownership of a .au domain name?

You need to have an ABN, ACN or RBN. The domain name must not be an Australian place name (Melbourne, Dandenong) and you should be able to directly derive the domain name from the business name, or it is a product or service that you provide.

How long is a domain name registered for?

.au and .uk domain names are registered for a period of two (2) years.
.com, .net, and .org can be registered for any period between one (1) and 10 years.
.info and .biz can be registered for any period between two (2) and 10 years.

Do I need to have a website to register your domain name?

You don't need to have a website to register your domain name.

How long does a registration last?

Registrations can be arranged for periods of two (2) year for .au and .uk domain names and from one (1) to 10 years for US domains. After the nominated period the owner of the name will be notified of the imminent expiration of the domain and invoiced to renew the registration.

If at that time the invoice is not paid then the registration will lapse and the name be returned to the pool of available names; if it is paid then the registration is renewed.

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique name that identifies an Internet site.

Domain Names always have 2 or more parts, separated by dots (for instance predelegation.com). The part on the left is the most specific, and the part on the right is the most general. Domain names provide a system of easy-to-remember Internet addresses.

How is my domain name found on the Internet?

This is done with the help of a DNS (Domain Name Server).

Used to map names to IP addresses and vice versa. Domain Name Servers maintain central lists of domain name/IP addresses and map the domain names in your Internet requests to other servers on the Internet until the specified web site is found.

What does "reserving" a domain name mean?

Reserving a domain name means it is removed from the pool of available names and is no longer available for purchase.

Which characters are allowed in the names?

Domain names are not case sensitive, and can only include alphanumeric characters and dashes [as in the "-" symbol] The name cannot begin or end in this symbol.
